Project Permit

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Permit are as spooky as hell and are thus widely regarded as the most difficult to catch on a fly rod. If you do get a shot at one, you might go dumb and blow it. Or you might make a great cast to an uninterested fish or sneeze and scare away every Permit on the flats. Or you might get lucky and hook one that makes such a long and fast run that your tackle melts. Whether or not you land one, you’ll likely spend days, months, and years thinking about it and yearning to do it again. “Obsession” is truly an accurate way to describe what this fish will do to your grey matter.

Expedition Belize & Project Permit: Aaron Adams of the BTT

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Permit are often referred to as one of the most elusive game fish that swims, captivating salt water flats anglers for years in their quest to catch them. And yet, little is known about them. What are their spawning and migration patterns? How healthy is the fish population? What regulations are needed to ensure adequate stock for future generations? Why do they piss me off so much when they won’t eat my obviously well placed fly? How can someone go 13 years without catching one and still get excited to go try again?

Watery Gear: Speaking of Flats Fishing…

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

A flattering endorsement for 580 lenses from a bonefish junkie.

580s Working the Flats

When fly fishing in saltwater, we can have an endless debate about what is the most important piece of equipment an angler needs. Fly rods, fly reels, fly lines. Don’t forget the right fly. But if you’re sight fishing, or even just reading the water, polarized glasses are mandatory. There are a whole host of polarized glasses on the market, but in my mind, Costa Del Mar’s with 580 lenses stands out above the rest.

A few years ago, Costa introduced the revolutionary 580 lenses. According to Costa, the 580′s “Use patented technology to cut down on the yellow light, allowing the eye to see more red, blue and green. Simply put, they’re the most advanced glare-beating polarized sun lenses on the planet, and they’ll change the way you see, period.”

Expedition Belize & Project Permit: Permit Pursuits by Chico Fernandez

Friday, June 4th, 2010

This is your year—¡Caramba!—to catch a permit on the flats. The right timing is the first step.

by Chico Fernandez.

It’s often said that the weather never gets too hot for permit on the flats. Even in the high heat of summer, when most bonefishing is done early and late in the day, permit are seen tailing during the middle of the day, in weather that is too hot for many fly fishers—particularly if you come from up north and are not used to 90-plus temperatures and high humidity.

Check out this incredible gallery of images from our friends at the IGFA Museum. Makes you want to hit the flats right now from wherever you stand. Also makes you want to see a lot more of these kinds of fish showing up in current pictures. Great thanks to Gail and Mike for sharing these.

Expedition Belize & Project Permit: TEVA Mountain Games Coverage

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

VAIL, Colorado — Some fishermen in Belize have caught (and released) the same fish so many times, they’ve given them nicknames. They pull their wooden boats up onto flats — white-blue areas of shallow water in the middle of the ocean — where permit fish come up on onto the sand. The fishermen recognize the beautiful silver fish by the markings on their fins that stick out of the water, says Al Perkinson, the vice president of marketing for Costa sunglasses, which sponsored a documentary film about fly fishing in Belize called “Currents of Belize.”

“We like to tell stories that are fishing-related that inspire people to protect and conserve,” Perkinson said.

The film is part of the Teva Mountain Games Outdoor Reels Film Series, which is showing tonight at the Lodge at Vail. The movie, which was shot last year and released this spring, focuses on Abbie Marin and Lincoln Westby, two fly fishing guides who spend their days out on the flats chasing the elusive permit, which Perkinson calls “the most elusive and difficult fish to catch on the fly.”
